Born in Trivandrum in 1965, Gopikrishna completed his BFA from the College of Art in the same city, and his MFA from the College of Art, New Delhi. His first solo show was held at the College of Fine Arts Gallery, Trivandrum in 1989.
Gopikrishna’s paintings appear as though they were pages from a book of fairytales. Animals that look like men and men who look like animals are all part of a world unified by their existence. In a single canvas, one can witness the ordinary and the impossible, unity and solitude, illumination (wisdom) and darkness (ignorance). In a world driven by the material existence of man, these scenarios are only possible in Gopikrishna’s wonderland!
The artist’s solo exhibitions include ones at Art Musings, Mumbai, 2007; Palette Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2006; Kashi Art Gallery, Mattanchery, 2004; Kashi Art Café, Cochin, 2002 and 2001; and Durbar Hall, Kerala, 2000. He has also participated in several group shows in India, Amsterdam, New York and Texas. In 2000 he won the Kerala State Award for Drawing from the Lalit Kala Akademi, and in 2002, from the All India Fine Arts Society in New Delhi.
