"My life and my cultural identity carve the directions of my expression.
Inspirations for expression emerge around and within me. I want my creative concerns to be relevant to my times, imbibing local, regional and universal consciousness. I want to express these in my own creative visual imagery. I want to evolve and leave behind creative visual symbols as references to our times. I think in colour and achieve consistent factor (Sthai Bhava) to accomplish creativity in my paintings."
So said Gogi Saroj Pal, an artist comfortable working with such diverse mediums as installation, painting, sculpture, graphic print, ceramics, jewellery, weaving and photography.
Born in 1945 in the small town of Neoli in Uttar Pradesh, Gogi was educated at the College of Art in Vanasthali, Rajasthan as well as the College of Art in Lucknow. Her creative outpourings are a result of a search for cultural identity and a reference point to the times we live in. Gogi's paintings are a mirror held up to society, showing the disparity in relationships between the sexes and are designed to exhibit the vicissitudes of a woman's life.
Gogi wanted to leave behind her a legacy of images that are an accurate reflection of our lives and the issues that affect humanity. "I want to evolve and leave behind, creative visual symbols, icons, as references of our times, to bridge the gaps in continuity of our cultural identity, for use in the concerns & epics of our times," explained Gogi. Keen observations of the world around her and an intensive search of her soul provided Gogi with material to transform into paintings of detailed visual impressions.
She lived and worked in Delhi. She passed away on 27 January 2024.

Her background.
I belong to a family that were revolutionary in their thinking (her father Dharam Pal and Uncle Yash Pal) played a proactive role during the Independence struggle of India. Yet her decision to take up painting as a profession was met with resistance. It was only due to my strong will and my mother's support that I was able to ran away from home to pursue my dream to become a painter.
The beginning
Even as a student I was rebel and followed my own instinct than the then prevalent trend of following the Western art idiom. While a student I used a lot of strong colours, it would disconcert the teachers. But I always think in colours and even today the same is true.
Her methodology
I have worked constantly without a break, my hands and brain had become conditioned to work in a certain manner, it was then that I made a conscious effort to break away and start afresh. I went back to gouache; as a student I was trained in the traditional method of painting.
Her subjects
I have always been a figurative artist. In the eighties my works were direct expressions, you could say autobiographical, they reveal my experiences as a women. I am concerned with the "eternal feminine"; my most recent paintings draw inspirations from contemporary society, and its advertising jingles.
