Girjesh Kumar Singh was born in Semra Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh in 1981. He graduated with a degree in Literature, Economics and Philosophy in 2000 before earning a BFA from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in 2004. He received an MFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Vadodara in 2006.
Girjesh interrogates the narrativization of human history through his work. He creates works out of bricks from demolished structures found around his hometown, as well as from other cities around the country. His work is a meditation on not just the history of his materials but also the meaning that they accrue through the importance accorded to them by society.
His first solo show, which was held at Sundaram Visual Art Gallery in Varanasi in 2004, was sponsored by Lalit Kala Akademi. His solo exhibition Often I Miss You was shown in Mumbai in 2011 and 2013, and New Delhi in 2014 by Rukshaan Art. His exhibition An Endless Journey was shown at Gallery Rosenfeld in London in 2018. His works have also been exhibited at Art International Istanbul in 2015, Expo Chicago in 2017, India Art Fair in 2015, 2017 and 2020, Art Dubai in 2020, and as part of The Baroda March in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2020-21.
Singh lives and works in Vadodara.
