Chowdhury Satyanarayana Patnaik was born in 1925, in Badam, Andhra Pradesh. He completed his diploma in Fine Arts from the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Madras, in 1955. During that period, he also did a course specializing in fresco and mural paintings at Banasthali Vidhyapith, Rajasthan. He also worked with the bronze medium for more than five decades, and was awarded a Research Fellowship in Bronze Sculpture from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, from 1975-77.
Patnaik had a long and continuous association with the field of education and art activities. As soon as he graduated, he joined the Educational department of the State Government, and only retired in 1983 after a long and illustrious career as Lecturer in Sculpture at the Government College for Women in Guntur there.
The artist’s sculptures and paintings have been featured in solo shows at various galleries around India. Doordarshan, the national Indian television channel, produced a documentary on his life and also made a program called ‘Practical Work in Bronze Sculpture – from Clay to Bronze’ featuring his work in 2001. Patnaik was honoured with several awards over the course of his career, including at the Mysore Dasara Exhibition in 1952, and from the Andhra Pradesh Lalit Kala Akademi in 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1978.
