Maurice Brianchon was born in Northwest France in 1899. He first studied in Bordeaux, at the École des Beaux-Arts there, then in 1917 moved to Paris and entered the École des Beaux Arts Décoratifs.
Brianchon first exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1920, and by 1922, was a committee member of the same Salon. In 1924, he won the Prix Blumenthal and a travel scholarship that he used to tour Spain, and in 1927, held his first one man exhibition in Paris. This exhibition was followed by successful showings in 1930 and 1932, and in 1934, Brianchon exhibited at the Venice Biennale as well as at the 'Artistes de ce Temps' at the Musée du Petit-Palais in Paris, firmly establishing his career as a painter.
Brianchon was appointed a teacher at École des Beaux Arts Décoratifs in 1936, and in 1939 he was awarded the Carnegie Prize. Ten years later, Brianchon was appointed Chef d'Atelier de Peinture at the I'Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris.
In addition to painting, Brianchon designed costumes and sets for several operas, undertook large mural commissions, and completed a number of illustrations for books. The decade of 1950s brought him international acclaim following his first one man show in London in 1951. In 1953, he was invited to document the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and he exhibited his work for the first time in the United States in 1959.
Brianchon was also one of the eight members of the collective, Painters of Poetic Reality, which included likeminded artists and intellectuals from diverse fields. Their intention was to create works that expressed the reality around them in a poetic manner. In this regard, the ambience of Brianchon’s paintings perhaps relates closest to the work of Edouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard.
Maurice Bianchon died in Paris in March, 1979.
