Vuillard's artistic training began at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he first met Pierre Bonnard. In 1888, whilst studying at the Académie Julian, Vuillard joined the avant-garde group later knows as Les Nabis, or 'The Prophets', whose members also included Bonnard, Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. Their attempts to integrate art and daily life, with a concentration on design and style, aimed to revitalize painting in turn of the century France. Maurice Denis' definition of painting, "a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order", expresses the Nabis' stylistic approach. Vuillard's paintings and decorative work mainly depict interiors, streets and gardens, executed in his characteristic delicate range of soft, blurred colors, as shown in the present work. This painting was executed in 1909 while Vuillard was staying with friends at a villa in Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer on the coast of Brittany.
