The splendidly ornamented Patron of Art Edition Catherine II the Great commemorates the great era of the Russian Empire.

The Patron of Art Editions are a range of fountain pens that focus on the promoters and advocates that helped to cultivate some of the most influential artistic movements. Issued annually since 1992, every Patron of Art Edition since 1995 has been available in two limited versions: as Limitation 4810, named after the height of Mont Blanc, as Limitation 888, named in honour of the number eight - considered throughout Asia to be a lucky number.

In the present Edition 888 lot the ornamentation is in solid rose gold featuring blossom wreath motifs adorning the dark red resin cap, precious rubies decorate the cap top of this edition, and has 18-karat / 750 gold nib, into which the symbol of the Russian monarchy - the two-headed eagle - is engraved.

Tsarina Catherine’s ambition was to continue the work of Peter the Great. Indeed, her commitment to the arts was impressive: she corresponded with Voltaire, Diderot and d’Alembert, among others. She is responsible for having the Hermitage – the famous winter palace - erected in St. Petersburg, and it is thanks to her love of painting that the royal art collection grew from a few dozen paintings to more than 4,000.
