Armand Guillaumin was a key member of the Impressionists, exhibiting at some of the now famous Salon des Refusés and in 1874 at the first ever exhibition organized by the group. Armand Guillaumin was a key member of the Impressionists, exhibiting at some of the now famous Salon des Refusés and in 1874 at the first ever exhibition organized by the group. The Salon des Refusés was exactly what its name implied: an exhibition of works refused by the 'respectable' annual Salon which was organised annually by the art establishment in Paris. The Salon des Refusés had come into being in 1863 when Manet and several other artists, outraged by the voting process required to exhibit at the Salon, rebelled and opened their own show. Although the Impressionists initially suffered ridicule for their avant-garde approach to painting, whilst their peers at the Salon won prizes and commissions, they inspired each other and gradually won over several critics and dealers. At the same time Paris was emerging as a cultural destination and major American collectors of the day would frequently visit. It was to the Impressionists that they mostly turned and works by Monet, Pissarro, Guillaumin and Renoir soon became their favourites.

Amongst the Impressionists, Guillaumin was especially close to Cézanne, who was just two years older than him. They spent a lot of time together painting landscapes side by side en plein air or studying the same still lifes when the weather did not permit them to work outside. Cézanne went on to inspire the next generation of artists with his structural approach to painting, whilst Guillaumin remained a true Impressionist throughout his career.
