In 1884 after a year of military service, Gustave Loiseau returned to civilian life and established himself as a painter, eventually becoming one of the foremost artists of the Post-Impressionist movement. He moved to Montmartre in 1887 to La Maison du Trappeur in the rue Ravignon. Loiseau was one of the first artists to occupy this house which would later achieve international fame as the Bateau-Lavoir, where Picasso, Juan Gris and Kees van... He moved to Montmartre in 1887 to La Maison du Trappeur in the rue Ravignon. Loiseau was one of the first artists to occupy this house which would later achieve international fame as the Bateau-Lavoir, where Picasso, Juan Gris and Kees van Dongen, among other renowned artists, later lived and worked.

Loiseau visited Pont-Aven in 1890 where he worked under the tutelage of Paul Gauguin, following the latter's return from his first visit to Tahiti. However, to a greater extent than those of any other members of the Pont-Aven School, the canvases of Gustave Loiseau come closest in style to the Impressionism advanced by Sisley, Monet, and Pissarro.

Mostly known as a painter of landscapes and river scenes, Loiseau only started working in the still life genre in 1921. It was after he had to sell a still life painting by his great friend Gauguin that he decided to make a copy of it as a keepsake. This painting would mark the debut of a series of still-lifes that Loiseau would execute over the coming years.

His work was and still is widely collected, with patrons throughout Europe and the United States by the early years of the 20th century. Examples of his painting can be found in several leading museums around the world such as the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
