“In any painting these forms, space and signs take a major roll of rhythmic vibration, movement, magnetic pull, tension in between, as if manifesting a ‘lila’ to take us immediately to another world, taking things from a natural to super natural state of mind, from understanding to a state of wonder.” - GANESH HALOI Ganesh Haloi’s artistic journey displays a fascinating evolution from pure landscapes to innerscapes. While abstract in nature, his works and motifs hold a profound connection to the artist’s inner psyche, personal experiences, and the transformative moments that have shaped his perspective. As Haloi himself puts it, “Everything begins in pain,” reflecting the profound emotional depth in his art. Primarily known for his breath-taking landscapes, Haloi ventured into portraiture during a short period in 1995, focusing on children and middle-aged women. Within a span of just 2-3 months, he created a limited set of portraits imbued with intense and brooding expressions, skilfully rendered with a sketch-like quality using pencil, gouache, or pastel on paper. Notably, the present lot stands out as the sole portrait executed on board, showcasing the artist’s versatility. The present lot is a rare example of Haloi’s experiments with portraiture. Here a woman in profile emerges from a dominating dark palette, captivating the foreground with her luminescent yellow presence. From ethereal landscapes to emotive portraits, his works offer a glimpse into the depths of the human soul and the beauty that lies within its complexities.
