Jawaharlal Nehru: An Autobiography [Signed by Nehru and Indira Gandhi]

Jawaharlal Nehru, An Autobiography, With Musings on The Recent Events in India, London: John Lane the Bodley Head, July 1936

pp. xiv, 618 pages including 13 black and white plates; original green cloth without dustjacket
8.5 x 6 x 2 in (22 x 15 x 5 cm)

Signed "Jawaharlal Nehru / Feb. 1949" on the half title page and by his daughter in full "Indira Nehru Gandhi", on the front end paper. India's first and, to date, only female prime minister. A wonderful association copy.

The book covers Nehru's life up to that point, including his childhood, education, and his involvement in the Indian independence movement.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part of the book is Nehru's autobiography, where he talks about his family background, his education in England, and his return to India. The second part of the book covers the period between 1919 and 1927, during which Nehru became involved in the Indian National Congress and participated in several political movements. The third part of the book covers the period between 1927 and 1935, during which Nehru served as the president of the Indian National Congress and played a significant role in the struggle for Indian independence.

The book is notable for its frank and honest tone, as well as its criticism of British colonial rule in India. In particular, Nehru discusses the Amritsar massacre of 1919 and the subsequent Non-Cooperation Movement, which he was involved in. He also discusses the Salt Satyagraha of 1930, in which he played a key role, and the subsequent Round Table Conferences in London, which he attended as a representative of the Indian National Congress.

This is an important historical document that provides insights into Nehru's life and the Indian independence movement. It is also an important work of literature, written in Nehru's distinctive style, which combines personal reflection with political analysis.
