A RARE MID-CENTURY FINN JUHL-STYLE OCCASIONAL CHAIR

Teak wood, fabric
39 x 29 x 36 in (99.1 x 73.7 x 91.4 cm)

Few would link the inspiration for this occasional chair, modelled after a design by the legendary Danish designer Finn Juhl, to efforts to build relations between India and Denmark back in 1957. India's first premier, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Copenhagen that year and in doing so, laid the foundation for friendly bilateral relations between both countries. It is likely that Danish designs seeped into India owing to strengthening ties between both nations. Mid-century Danish designs are famed for their simplicity and functionality; this resonated with a trend of minimalism that universally gained popularity following the Second World War.

Finn Juhl is credited with having contributed to the widespread popularity of Danish design. Self-taught in designing furniture, he leveraged his knowledge of architecture to create some of the most unique, functionalist furniture of his time. Beginning his relationship with furniture designing when he was only twenty-one, he collaborated with Niels Vodder, the cabinetmaker with whom he would forge a twenty-year relationship in creating furniture. Vodder and Juhl's collaboration led many iconic designs, including the famed NV45 chair that propelled Juhl to fame.

The chair in this lot resembles an arm chair produced by Vodder and designed by Juhl in 1965. Juhl was active at many furniture exhibitions, and the 1965 arm chair was displayed at the Snedkerlaugets Furniture Exhibition held in the same year. One of the most remarkable aspects of its design is the manner in which the back rest is suspended between the frames, without a spine attaching it to the seat.
