Chariot Figure
Tamil Nadu20th...
View Dimensions The Vyala is a Hindu mythological animal portrayed with the head of a ferocious lion, tiger, horse and elephant and body of a beast. It is prominent in South Indian temple architecture and can be found on the walls and pillars at the entrance. It is said to be a guardian creature that protects both god and devotee spiritually. This Vyala is part of a chariot figure that was used in processions during festivals and special occasions. Observe the hand-carved lady sitting on the back of Vyala in a lion's form. Notice the exquisitely carved jewellery on the lady’s neck. A figure at the base can be seen being crushed, as it depicts the triumph of good over evil.
