PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

Deccani art used minimal detail and a subdued colour palette to create a sense of tranquillity and spiritual calm when depicting Sufi saints. The dervish reads, seated against a bolster on a terrace.

The Sufis believe in attaining transcendence by a union with God through love. Writing in The Legacy of Islam, Sir Thomas Arnold and Alfred Guillaume observe that, "In the early period recitation of the Quran was regularly employed to bring about the trance-state, and soon love-poems began to be used for the same purpose." (quoted in Randhawa and Galbraith, Indian Painting, pp. 4 - 5)
