This bust features an expressive Avalokitesvara or Padmapani, one of the gods of the Buddhist pantheon. Lavishly decked, he holds a lotus in his left hand. His face is serene and meditative.

Sculptures of Avalokitesvara from the Pala dynasty can be found in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum.
