Paan Dan with Associated Tray

Box: 4 x 4.5 x 2.5 in (10 x 11.25 x 6.25 cm)
This set belongs to a class of metalwork known as "Bidri" for its place of origin, Bidar. The Paan Dan Tray and Box were made to hold paan, a digestif made of a betel leaf rolled with lime, paste and spice, and to contain other spices.

Bidri boxes had an important role in high Indian society. In fact, when the box was presented during ceremonies it meant that for the guests it was time to leave.

The tray is in the shape of a leaf and the pattern decorating both the tray and the box is mostly cross-hatched. However a repetitive motif composed of differently shaped leaves develops on the edges of the box and the tray, and decorates the middle of the tray as well. It is extremely rare to find a complete set like this Paan Daan and associated tray.
