Ten Armed Ganesha with Consort

Bronze

India, probably South, 18th century

This is a bronze representation of the elephant-headed god Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati, with his consort seated on his left knee. Ganesha is also called Ganapati 'the remover of obstacles' and is worshipped at the start of a ritual or the beginning of a journey.

It is said that the whole universe is contained in his prominent abdomen, and his trunk is bent to remove obstacles. Here the god is depicted with ten arms holding some of his attributes, like the 'modak' or sweet he has in one of his right hands. He also holds his broken tusk, with which he is said to have assisted the great sage Vyasa in writing the epic Mahabharata, in his lower lefthand.

A cobra wraps round his belly and his mouse 'vahana', or vehicle, is shown at his left.
