Portrait of a Prince being presented with a Coconut

In this miniature a prince is portrayed being presented with a coconut wrapped in silver foil, considered an auspicious tradition.

The painting is by the hand of Wajid, who was the principal artist at Isarda during this time. This miniature is important because apart from being a fine example of painting from this School, it demonstrates how Mughal customs were adopted at local or provincial courts.

The Thikana of Isarda was south east of Jaipur, and was responsible for the flowering of a wonderful school of painting with artists like Wajid in the late 17th century.
