Nandi, the vehicle of Shiva, is known by several names such as Basaveshwara and Nandikeswara among others. He is not only the vehicle of Shiva, but also serves as his messenger and door guardian. For this reason his sculpture is placed at the entrances of Shiva temples.

This well sculpted stone figure of a seated Nandi comes from the Vijayanagara Dynasty. This was a prolific dynasty that built beautiful palaces, outstanding public buildings and gardens. Their lively stone sculptures are examples of the creations of that 'City of Victory'.

This Nandi has a nice rounded body. His horns are stubs, and his hump is small and well shaped. He is decorated with a lovely necklace of bells and a small saddle on his back. The expression on his face is innocent and befits a young bull. One of his front legs is raised, while the other is folded below his body in a realistic manner. The body is carefully modeled with a natural look. All these features make this sculpture a pleasing example.
