Vishnu Reclining on Sheshnaag

Vishnu is often depicted reclining on the coils of Sheshnaag, his multi-headed cobra, while the god rests between cycles of the universe. Sheshnaag is believed to float over the universal ocean and encircle the world. Shesh means "remainder" symbolizing what remains once the universe ends, and what triggers the next cosmic cycle. The serpent is also called Ananta which means "endless"and stands for the endless cycles of re-birth.

The serpent's five heads rise over Vishnu's head, symbolic of the protection it offers. The god in this representation does not bear any attributes in his hands, but wears his typical headdress, the semi-cylindrical mitre with a flattened knob on top (kirtimukuta). The two goddesses seated on either side of Vishnu are possibly his consorts Lakshmi and Bhudevi.
