Read More Born in Guruvayur in Kerala, Gayatri is an artist deeply concerned for society, and expresses this concern not just through art but also his other activities. He has worked as a freelance architect and built several houses for the poor; he has also directed and acted in short films and plays, and published several studies on art and literature. Gayatri has worked closely with the homeless and the downtrodden, even living with them for some time, and this reflects in his art. Most of Gayatri’s work is a direct result of his closeness with the marginalized, and he seeks for his art to create a platform on which they can be given a voice or representation. Gayatri’s best known series of works is aptly titled ‘Map of the Marginalised’ where he throws light upon the everyday banalities of peoples that society has not homogenized. His work is not about the urban or the rural, but about a certain section of the society which the world actively chooses to turn a blind eye to. Kathakali dancers, field workers and domestic animals form an integral part of his artistic creations. His landscape is never idyllic, showcasing the physicality of existence – men working in fields, a potter at work, even a room full of machinery which forms a make-shift shop for a barber. Gayatri had his first solo exhibition at Hotel Elite International, Guruvayur, in 1977 and has had numerous solo shows since, including those held at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; and at the Lalit Kala Akademi, Kerala and New Delhi. His most recent solo show was held at Art Entrance Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008. His work has also been a part of group shows at Artchill Gallery, Jaipur; Gallery Hues, Bangalore; and Heritage Art Gallery, Chennai. He was recognized with an award from the Kerala Sahitya Academy in 1996, and won the Landsmen Award, Switzerland, in 1986. The artist lives and works in Guruvayur, Kerala.
